“Dangal,” starring Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, has emerged as India’s biggest box office hit ever.
The sports drama, released days before Christmas, overtook 2014’s “PK,” also starring Khan, this week as the country’s highest-grossing pic in history. As of Sunday, it had brought in $51.9 million in India, and a record-breaking $11.3 million in North America.
The film is directed by Nitesh Tiwari, produced by Khan and Disney India, and tells the real-life story of wrestling champion Mahavir Singh Phogat and his word-class wrestler daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari.
Khan, who is also a director and producer, has dominated the industry over recent years, credited with hits like “Dhoom 3,” “Ghajini” and the sports drama “Lagaan,” which was nominated for an Oscar in 2001.
