David Sakurai Joins ‘Unbroken’ Sequel as ‘The Bird’

In case you haven’t heard, a sequel to Angelina Jolie’s “Unbroken” is in production, and Danish Japanese actor David Sakurai has joined the cast, according to Deadline.

The film, currently titled “Unbroken: Path to Redemption,” is being helmed by Harold Cronk and tells the story of World War II veteran Louis Zamperini after he returns home from years spent as a prisoner of war in Japan. Sakurai will be playing “the Bird,” the commander of the POW camp where Zamperini was held and his chief tormentor. This role was played by the Japanese music artist Miyavi in Jolie’s “Unbroken.”

Sakurai was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, and moved briefly to Japan to study acting. He eventually returned to his home country to pursue filmmaking and acting professionally and has appeared in a number of Danish and Japanese short films.

One of his best-known credits is a 2015 Hungarian dark rom-com called “Liza, the Fox Fairy.” More recently, he portrayed Scythe, one of Iron Fist’s nemeses, in the Netflix series “Iron Fist.”
