Former California Treasurer Matt Fong Dies Of Cancer

Politician Matt Fong, former treasurer of California, lost a four-year battle with skin cancer yesterday.

Fong is known for his unsuccessful campaign against incumbent California Senator Barbara Boxer in 1998. Fong lost that election despite support from Trent Lott and Newt Gingrich.

“We have lost a great leader in the Asian Pacific Islander Community,” said California State Assemblymember Warren T. Furutani, in a statement. “As the son of California’s first Asian Pacific Islander Constitutional officer, March Fong Eu, Matt Fong was dedicated to public service and served our state proudly for many years. His untimely death is a great loss to California.”

The AP reported that Fong, who was 57, died at his home in Pasadena with his wife Paula and family by his side.
