It’s Election Day across the country. Whether you have a major gubernatorial race in your area or just some local school board selections to make on your ballot, please get out there and do the right thing to better your community.
We at KoreAm will be closely monitoring a few races, including Mark Keam’s bid for the Virginia House of Delegates for the 35th District in Northern Virginia. Keam, an attorney and former Capitol Hill staffer for U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-Illinois), has long been active with the Korean American Coalition in Washington, D.C. Keam, a Democrat, won the endorsement of the Washington Post, who called him “one of the most promising new faces in local politics” and described him as a “thoughtful, serious community activist whose idealism is informed by solid experience on Capitol Hill and in the telecommunications industry.” He is up against Republican James E. Hyland, a lawyer-lobbyist, who is apparently considered a hard-liner even within his own party.
Today, Democrat Kevin Kim is also vying for a seat on the New York City Council.
Meanwhile, in Maine, voters will decide whether to repeal a law that makes same-sex marriage legal in that state. The law was passed by Maine’s Legislature and signed by Democratic Gov. John Baldacci last May, but has never taken effect. Let’s hope folks there are more enlightened than we here in Prop. 8 country.
