Health Benefits of Eating Kimchi (And Other Fermented Foods)

Kimchi, yogurt, pickled vegetables, kombucha and yes, wine. What do they have in common other than a strong, sour aroma? They are fermented foods that you probably should incorporate into your diet because, believe it or not, aged food and drinks have health benefits that will keep your digestive system happy. It’s understandable why some would be turned off by the pungent scent– I don’t like it either. However, I admit I do love the way it tastes. I’m one of those who would eat pickles out of the jar and add vinegar to a lot of foods (I can probably thank my family’s cooking for that). Well, if you like the taste of fermented food as well, you’re in luck.

According to Katie from Wellness Mama, fermented foods have been through lactofermentation where natural bacteria, along with sugar and starch, create lactic acid. In addition to preserving the food, fermentation creates enzymes, b-vitamins, Omega-3 fatty acids and probiotics. Because of the natural fermentation process, it makes it easier for your system to break down and digest the food. Also, these foods are generally inexpensive to buy or make at home, so you’ll keep your wallet happy too!

If you’re still hesitant to boost your intake of these pungent foods, don’t worry! Here’s a list of commonly eaten fermented foods that are worth a try:

Kimchi: This dish is a mix of cabbage, carrots, garlic, onions and a spicy paste. This is commonly eaten in Korea as a side dish and may help improve blood sugar, blood pressure, lower cholesterol, prevent constipation and reduce liver disease– that covers quite a bit of health problems!

Kombucha: This drink has become rather popular and has been labeled the next miracle food. This fermented drink originated from China and the Middle East. It helps with digestion, supports your immune system, helps to detoxify and cleanse your body and, with summer around the corner, may help aid in weight loss.

Yogurt: No, we’re not talking about the sugary, cotton candy-flavored yogurt you would eat as a kid. For full benefits, opt for a yogurt that is unflavored and has no added sugar, such as plain greek yogurt. This may also help with weight loss and ladies, the good bacteria in yogurt will help keep your… ahem… lady parts healthy and functioning properly.
