How Fashion Blogger Eugenie Grey Makes A Living Off of Instagram

For most of us, Instagram is an app we turn to when we want to be entertained by heavily filtered pictures of food, selfies and inspirational quotes. For fashion blogger Eugenie Grey who runs the popular fashion blog Feral Creature, Instagram is how she makes her living. Specifically, 46% of Grey’s income comes from sponsorships through Instagram. I know what you’re thinking. How?

Grey is a top user on Instagram mostly due to her savvyness and dedication. While she was lucky to join Instagram early–she joined just a months after Instagram launched in 2010–Grey emphasizes that her popularity is due to her “consistent, quality content” which in turn puts her at the top of the recommended users list.

A big part of becoming Insta-famous is posting often. Grey explains that she posts #ootd (outfit of the day) instagram posts almost every day. The #ootd hashtag is popular and by writing in the hashtag, Grey is able to widen her audience.

However, quality is just as important as consistency and Grey displays a meticulous, perfectionist attitude towards each of her Instagram posts. When she takes an Instagram of her Umami burger for example, Grey first removes the placemat underneath and messes with the placement of the cup and condiments to look more askew. Then she stands up to take the photo, making sure she gets an “eagle’s eye point of view.” Once the photo is taken, Grey retouches the photo to remove the dust and stains in the silverware.
