In its second weekend of release in South Korea, “Searching,” starring John Cho and directed by Aneesh Chaganty, surpassed local Korean film “On Your Wedding Day” to become the No. 1 film of the weekend.
The Korean Film Council reported 767,675 ticket sales from Friday to Sunday, earning $5.79 million. Overall, the thriller has accumulated $13 million in profit from 1.7 million ticket sales over the past two weekends. It accounted for almost 50 percent of the total revenue share for the weekend box office.
The film, which also stars Sarah Sohn and Michelle La, has garnered interest for its unique digital storytelling, Asian American leads and positive reviews. “Searching” has a 92 percent certified fresh rating and 89 percent audience approval on Rotten Tomatoes as of Sept. 12.
Chaganty took to Twitter to share his reaction.
