Korean Plastic Surgery Clinic Under Fire for Displaying Medical Waste

Plastic surgery clinics in the affluent Gangnam district of the South Korean capital face stiff competition for customers, so one clinic came up with a jaw-dropping idea.

They filled a glass case filled with surgically removed jaw bones hoping to show its “expertise” in double-jaw surgery, a bone-cutting major procedure that is becoming increasingly common in Korea.

Oin Plastic Surgery in Seoul recently posted to its website a photo of its newly decorated lobby, which spotlights a case filled with hundreds of mandibles of its patients over the years.

“You can see your operated jaw bone for yourself after surgery,” the clinic declared.

The controversial post was removed after it came under scrutiny by netizens, but people are still sharing the photo via social media.

Although the clinic said it received permission from clients to put the jawbones on display, the furor over the photo has prompted Gangnam District officials to start an investigation of the clinic on the charge of violating the Administration Law regarding improper use of medical waste.

Yonhap News reports that the district fined Oin Plastic Surgery approximately $3,000 for the violation but details were unclear on whether the investigation was concluded.
