David Ryu, a candidate for the Los Angeles City Council District 4 seat, revamped his website last Thursday to make it more user-friendly and appealing to potential voters as the March 3 primary election nears.

“Simplicity is the best. I want to get as much information out there as possible before the election,” Ryu told KoreAm by phone.

Ryu, 39, is one of 14 candidates vying to represent District Four, which encompasses Sherman Oaks and Miracle Mile and includes Hollywood and Los Feliz.

Although Ryu was one of the last ones of the group to announce his candidacy last March, he is already leading in his fundraising efforts, amassing a total of $315,000 in contributions thus far, according to his office. The Korea Daily has reported that approximately half of Ryu’s contributions have come from the L.A. Korean community.

Ryu, a Korean American who serves as Director of Development and Public Affairs at the Kedren Acute Psychiatric Hospital and Community Mental Health Center, a Los Angeles non-profit health care provider, is running against several seasoned political aides, including Steve Veres and Carolyn Ramsay, the chief of staff to current District Four Councilman Tom LaBonge, who has reached his term limit.

Ryu serves on the board of several Korean American organizations and his political experience includes working as a senior deputy to former Los Angeles County Supervisor Yvonne Burke.

While Ryu’s previous website was for donation purposes only, his relaunched site, www.ryuforcouncil.com, is a comprehensive site that provides more information about Ryu and allows users to directly register to vote and endorse his campaign.

The 2015 L.A. City Council race has proved to be an interesting one to watch. Two Korean Americans have thrown their hats into the ring. In addition to Ryu, Grace Yoo, the former executive director of the Korean American Coalition, is running against LA City Council president Herb Wesson in the District 10 race.
