Masala: Pinay Author Melissa de la Cruz Brings Joy to Audiences With a New Disney Studio

Disney never fails to bring the magic to life, and young adult fiction author Melissa de la Cruz has accepted an offer to create a brand-new Disney studio that will keep audiences enchanted.

As someone who always felt an affinity with Disney, the Philippines native has maintained a collaboration with the company for almost 20 years now. A proud author at the Disney Publishing Worldwide, de la Cruz also created the vampire book series “Blue Bloods” and “The Descendants,” which spent more than 50 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list. The latter was eventually adapted into a Disney original movie and became the number one cable TV movie of 2015.

As the leader of this highly anticipated project, de la Cruz hopes to bring fresh and authentic voices to Disney. Though the studio is still in its early stages, the goal is to seek out debut and acclaimed authors, forging joyful stories that will reach global audiences. De la Cruz explained that she wants to continue to create stories that make people proud. “I’m honored to hear that my Filipino community is proud of me, and I don’t want to disappoint,” she said.

Being a part of Disney is a dream come true for anyone. The Pinay author also mentioned that she’s always been a huge Disney fan, even since childhood. “I was a Disney kid. My family are huge Disney fans. We always celebrated every big moment by going to Disneyland,” she said. “It was, as my dad said, ‘The happiest place on earth.’” De la Cruz is honored to continue her collaboration with the company by taking on a new leadership role.
