McDonald’s Lunar New Year Menu: Yay or Nay?

If you thought Japanese “sushi Kit Kats was cool/weird, then you’ll get a kick out of McDonald’s special menu items for the Lunar New Year in mainland China. One of Shanghai Expat‘s editors hit his local McD’s to try its Emperor’s Best Shrimp Burger and Empress’ Pineapple Burger, then wash it all down with a Smiling Concubine Lychee Tea (available hot or cold, in case you were wondering).

The results are mixed, as you’ll soon see:

The shrimp burger seems like an elevated version of McDonald’s Japan’s ebi-filet-o (shrimp burger — think Filet-O-Fish but with a deep-fried shrimp cake and Thousand Island dressing instead of tartar sauce) thanks to a fancier bun. It’s hard to tell what exactly is in the sandwich beyond shrimp patties and special sauce, but it looks pretty close to the ebi-filet-o.

The pineapple burger sounds about as disappointing as he’s made it out to be, so we won’t argue there. The lychee tea looks like it would be better cold and with boba versus hot, but we’re pretty positive you can find better teas stateside to make up for that.

Would you try these special Lunar New Year treats if they were offered in the U.S.? Let us know in the comments below!
