Police at Cayman Islands have called off the search for Norman Lee, an artist for DC and Marvel comics, who went missing Thursday, March 5 during a snorkeling trip, reports the Washington Post.

Lee, 47, was last seen snorkeling with his wife, Jan, 250 yards off the eastern coast of Grand Cayman before they became separated in the water. When his wife returned to shore alone, she reported him missing.

Authorities launched a massive search for the artist, with the assistance of helicopters, five vessels sent by the Joint Marine Unit and Department of Environment and a dozen volunteer divers, but the search was called off on Friday evening due to strong currents.

“We put all assets available to us, both law enforcement and privately owned,” Police Chief Inspector Brad Ebanks told Cayman 27. “We thank all those who assisted us in this time of need. Unfortunately we were unable to find or recover Mr. Lee.”

Lee was best known for his ink work on Marvel comics Spider-manAvengers, X-men, Wolverine Annual as well as DC series Supergirl and Starman. He joined Marvel in the 1990s and had been a fixture in comic conventions for years.

Families, friends, colleagues and fans have flooded Norman Lee’s Facebook page and Twitter with tributes to his life and work.
