Seoul-based Unsangdong Architects recently won first prize in a competition to build an art & culture center in SeongDong-gu, South Korea.
“Culture Forest” features an urban park wrapped up inside a building. Powered and naturally lit by the sun, the center is filled with benches, trees, lush vegetation, and places to relax and reflect while looking down at the city. The roof of the building contains a tree-filled courtyard and is covered in solar panels to provide renewable energy for the center.
Inside, the main highlight of the art & culture center is the wine-colored Flying Theater, which is composed of geometric shapes to enhance acoustics. In addition to concerts, the center will provide library programs for residents, children’s playing areas, and programming that encourages eco-friendly and healthy living. The project is expected to be completed next year.
