Our Top 5 Places For Shaved Ice & Shaved Snow

It’s snowing! Well, not quite. I’m sure most of us grew up having shaved ice, whether at a carnival or at home during the summer with your very own shaved ice machine (remember the Snoopy one?). I still remember pouring blue, raspberry-flavored Kool-Aid all over my cone.

But recently, instead of shaved ice, I’ve been reaching for shaved snow. If you haven’t had this before, shaved snow consists of shavings of flavored, creamy ice; it’s light and fluffy and very reminiscent of fresh snow. It’s a perfect base to pair with toppings such as mochi, cookies, cereal and, of course, condensed milk.

This isn’t exactly new dessert and if you’ve been to a boba cafe, they probably serve their version of shaved ice or shaved snow.  But this dessert is so popular and there are so many to choose from, we just had to break it down and share our favorites with you!

Snowflakes brings traditional Hawaiian shaved ice to the mainland. They even have their own house-made syrups and flavors! If the summer heat is really getting to you, you have the option of adding a scoop of ice cream in your shaved ice. But they don’t have just any regular ice cream flavors. Ever heard of a Thai Tea flavor with Sriracha and peanut brittle? Neither did we.

If you’re not fond of your dessert piled high with every cookie, candy, syrup and cereal known to man, then the simplicity of Snow Monster may be for you. Yes, I’m one of the simple ones! A pile of shaved snow with a topping or two is just perfect me for. Of course, they can always add more! And who could resist those cute scoops of ice cream wedged between macarons?

Sugar lovers, this one is for you. Sweet, delectable plates of shaved snow piled high with several toppings. Some even have slices of cheesecake! They also have dairy free options for those that are lactose-intolerant or simply want a healthier dessert option.

Class 302 does their Taiwanese shaved snow right! With a good amount of toppings, but not overwhelmingly sweet, these large portions are perfect to share for late-night dessert. The restaurants are also set up like a children’s classroom! Cute, but slightly odd, because there are actually quite a lot of adults that go there to eat.

This one is a bit different. Italian ice is similar to shaved ice, but with a smoother, less chunky texture. They are scooped out, just like ice cream, and you can mix and match flavors to create your own. If you’re craving a creamier treat, they have the option of adding frozen custard to your Italian ice.

Did your favorite shaved snow or shaved ice spot make it our list? Which ones do you recommend us to try?
