Pics of the Day: South Korean Women Protest Societal Pressure By Baring Armpit Hair

Women through the ages have endured shaving nicks, wax burns and all sort of expensive procedures to achieve the standard of having smooth, hairless armpits. Raise your hands if you think that’s stupid. Tired of the pressure to conform, a group of brazen ladies in South Korea gathered in Seoul’s Kwang-Hwa Moon Square to protest the social convention, carrying signs with messages such as “I can be myself with my hair,” “Since when did shaving armpit hair become mandatory in our society?” and “Long live my hair.”

Around the world, women are going au naturel in the pits as a way to redefine beauty. In China, there’s even an armpit hair selfie competition.
