Pixar’s Upcoming Short Features A Hawaiian Volcano in Love

By now, you probably know about Pixar’s upcoming animated feature Inside Out. Voiced by actors such as Mindy Kaling, Amy Poehler and Bill Hader, the film is sure to make a splash at the box office when it comes out in theaters this month on June 19th.

But what you probably didn’t know about is the delightful treat that’s in store for you before you watch Inside Out. Released alongside this summer’s animated feature is Pixar’s newest short, Lava. Although we haven’t seen the short for ourselves, everything we’ve heard about it has us convinced that it’s going to be adorable. The musical love story is set in Hawaii and you’ll never guess who’s in love: a volcano.

“I wanted to tell a love story between two volcanoes that takes place over millions and millions of years,” director James Ford Murphy told NBC News, “that reflects my love of Hawaiian geology, music, and culture, and also celebrates our characters as a place.”

The short features the voice of Kuana Torres Kahele, who is part of the Hawaiian Music group Na Palapalai, winner of five No Hoku Hanohano awards, is a Hula dancer, a composer, a songwriter, a master lei maker and an educator.

“Bring a tissue,” Kuana Torres Kahele advises audiences. “Because you’re going to need it for the first two, three minutes.”
