Six Asian American comedians will be performing in the upcoming series “Comedy InvAsian,” a live and filmed stand-up show expected to kick off next year at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles.
The series will feature Asian American comedians from different backgrounds — including Paul “PK” Kim, Atsuko Okatsuka, Kevin Yee, Joey Guila, Robin Tran and Amy Hill — and each comedian will have his or her own day to perform a one-hour special.
Teaming up with Viva Pictures, producers Koji Steven Sakai and Quentin Lee created Comedy InvAsian to showcase and celebrate the diversity of Asian American comedy in both genre and representation to the world.
“Throughout my filmmaking career, I’ve worked with many comedians from Amy Hill to Randall Park to Dwayne Perkins to Paul Kim to JT Tatara and realized that there was an immense and untapped potential in the Asian American comedy scene,” Lee said via email. “With the success of Ali Wong’s ‘Baby Cobra’ and Margaret Cho’s concert films, Koji and I wondered why there hasn’t yet been a television series with each episode featuring a one-hour special of our favorite comedians. Hence, Comedy InvAsian was born.”
Viva Pictures will be selling the series to cable and streaming networks as well as making the series available on iTunes, Amazon.com and possibly on DVD.
The series is set to begin on Feb. 10 at the Japanese American National Museum. Tickets and information on the series are expected to be on the show’s website after New Year’s Day.
“Our success depends a lot on everyone’s support, so we hope you’d come to laugh with us,” Lee said.
