‘Slumdog Millionaire’ Star Dev Patel Has Two New Movies and a New Hairstyle

Sure, Slumdog Millionaire was released seven years ago and The Newsroom just finished airing its third and final season on HBO, but Dev Patel’s career is only looking better than ever. On March 6th, Patel will have two films released here in the United States – The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Chappie. But first, we have to talk about his new hairstyle.

For as long as he’s been in the spotlight, Dev Patel has always sported the same hairstyle– Tidy, boyish, and something any mom would approve of. Now he’s rocking the longer locks and facial hair, which definitely gives him a more…mature look. In an interview with The Guardian, Patel says it’s for a role and “he’s not sure if he should keep it.” Should he? Here’s 5 more pictures below to help you decide.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s talk about his actual movies.

First, there is The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, the sequel to the sleeper, senior-citizen friendly hit The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Joined by a returning cast of British legends such as Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, Dev Patel’s character, Sonny, tries to expand his senior citizen retirement home while trying to balance his upcoming wedding and a suave new guest played by Richard Gere. For fans of the first film, the sequel promises to provide more wacky hijinks, laughs and fun.

Patel’s other movie, Chappie, is a change of pace for him. A science fiction movie from the director of District 9 and Elysium, Chappie appears to be about an ET-esque robot with artificial intelligence named, you guess it, Chappie. Patel plays a kind-hearted scientist who “raises” Chappie and encourages him to explore his potential, much to dismay of Hugh Jackman’s ex-military character who has a thing against robots. While much of the movie seems to be kept under wraps, it looks as if the movie will come down to a showdown between Dev Patel and Hugh Jackman over the Chappie robot. And who isn’t down for that?

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel opens on March 6th, 2015 in limited release. Chappie opens on March 6th, 2015 in a theater near you.
