US Lawmakers Welcome The Year Of The Rooster

Gung hay fat choy!

The Year of the Rooster is upon us, and with it Lunar New Year festivities, which begin tomorrow and stretch until the first week of February. Asian American lawmakers are celebrating as well.

“As we welcome the Year of the Rooster, let us also celebrate the rich heritage of our diverse Asian Pacific American communities and their many contributions to our nation,” Rep. Judy Chu, chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, said in a statement Friday. “May this new year bring peace, prosperity, health, and good fortune to all!”

Events are planned across the country, from the Lunar New Year Parade & Festival in New York’s Manhattan and Los Angeles’ 118th annual Chinese New Year parade and festival to San Francisco, where the largest annual celebration of Lunar New Year outside Asia is held on the streets of the city’s Chinatown.

Rep. Grace Meng, who introduced a House resolution to officially recognize Lunar New Year, said it is “time for Congress to acknowledge and appreciate this special and important holiday that celebrates the customs and culture of Asian Americans.”

“Xin Nian Kuai Le to all those celebrating in our country and around the world!” Rep. Ted Lieu said.

How are you celebrating the new year?
