South Korean violinist Yang In-mo has won the 54th International Violin Competition Premio Paganini in Genoa, Italy, becoming the first Korean to ever take the prestigious title, reports the Korea Herald.

On March 8, the 20-year-old violinist not only took home the €20,000 ($27,600) cash prize but also secured a one-year contract with Caecilia, one of Europe’s leading management agencies. Yang also received three secondary special awards, including the “Prize in memory of Dr. Enrico Costa,” which is awarded to the youngest finalist in the competition. He is set to perform alongside several renowned orchestras across Europe throughout the year.

Meanwhile, Japanese violinist Fumika Mohri ranked second place and Albrecht Menzel from Germany ranked third in the competition.

Born in Seoul, Yang made his recital debut at the age of 11 at the Kumho Prodigy Series and has since competed in several international contests. Last year, Yang took first place at the 2014 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition and second prize at the Yehudi Menuhin International Competition.

Yang is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree at New England Conservatory.
