Anna Akana, better known for her YouTube antics, will be headlining the upcoming indie film, “Go Back to China.”
A followup to director Emily Ting’s 2015 movie “Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong,” “Go Back to China” follows spoiled, rich girl Sasha Li (Anna Akana) after she’s cut off by her father (Richard Ng) and is forced to work in the family’s Chinese toy factory. In addition to getting a much needed reality check in China, Li develops a passion for toy design and even gets to reconnect with her estranged half-sister (Lynn Chen). Told through the lens of a girl struggling to acclimate to a new way of life, the film also offers an honest look at the human cost of the manufacturing industry in China. This will be Akana’s first time being the female lead of a full-length movie.
“Go Back to China” is set to have its world premiere on Saturday, March 9 at SXSW.
