‘The Big Sick’ and ‘Master of None’ Honored By AFI

The American Film Institute revealed their official selections for the 2017 AFI Awards, and Kumail Nanjiani and Aziz Ansari each got some love.

“The Big Sick” was officially selected as one of the American Film Institute’s Movies of the Year. Written by real-life couple Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon, the romantic comedy follows the story of how the two met and fell in love despite familial disapproval and Emily’s mysterious and nearly fatal illness.

Aziz Ansari is co-creator, writer and star of Netflix’s “Master of None.” The show follows the adventures of Dev Shah, an aspiring actor in New York City struggling to balance love, his career and other personal and cultural experiences. The Emmy-winning show is one of AFI’s TV Programs of the Year.

The AFI Awards are meant to be a celebration of motion picture excellence, and the inclusion of “The Big Sick” and “Master of None” in the Institute’s list of most artistically and culturally significant works of the year reinforces the importance and power of diverse storytelling.

The honorees will receive their awards during a private luncheon and ceremony on Jan. 5.
