Awkwafina Lands Starring Role in ‘Dracula’-based Film ‘Renfield’

Awkwafina is gearing up for a new adventure.

Following her recent leading part in Marvel’s hit “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” Awkwafina landed a role in Universal Pictures’ monster film, “Renfield,” directed by “The LEGO Batman Movie” (2017) and “The Tomorrow War” (2021) director Chris McKay. She will co-star alongside actors Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage

According to a Dec. 1 Hollywood Reporter article, the project is based on the 1897 Bram Stoker novel, “Dracula,” in which the character Renfield was originally introduced as an asylum patient with an unquenchable thirst for blood. In a twist, Mckay’s “Renfield” will be a modern-day adventure-comedy, following the story of a dysfunctional and toxic relationship between the infamous Count Dracula (Cage) and his lackey, Renfield (Hoult). Awkwafina’s character is currently unnamed, but will apparently ally with Renfield in a quest to take down the vampire.

“Renfield” marks yet another addition to Awkwafina’s extensive filmography, which has grown exponentially ever since her breakout role in 2018’s “Crazy Rich Asians.” Since then, she’s racked up roles and acting awards alike, starring in trailblazing films like “Raya and the Last Dragon” (2021) and winning a Best Actress Golden Globe for her performance in 2019’s “The Farewell.”

As of now, “Renfield” is still in pre-production stages.
