Chloe Bennet Claps Back At Instagram Comment Over Last Name

“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” actress Chloe Bennet reasserted her Chinese American background and called Hollywood “racist” in an Instagram comment to defend her last name.

Chloe Bennet, who was born Chloe Wang, took to her Instagram Tuesday to express her gratitude to and respect for fellow actor, Ed Skrein, who walked away from his role as Ben Daimio — who is Japanese American in the comics — in the “Hellboy” reboot this past week.

In the comments, a now-deactivated follower took issue with the fact that she changed her last name from Wang to Bennet (her father’s first name) when she began acting.

Bennet replied, checking the commenter by saying that “changing [her] last name doesn’t change that fact that… [she] was culturally raised both American and Chinese.”

Bennet also said that the reason she felt compelled to change her surname was because “Hollywood is racist and wouldn’t cast [her] with a last name that made them uncomfortable.”

“I’m doing everything I can with the platform I have,” Bennet said. “To make sure no one has to change their name again.”

The “S.H.I.E.L.D.” actress has also called out Gigi Hadid and Steve Harvey for anti-Asian sentiments.
