Calling all artists and photographers! We’ve got a new contest designed especially for you.

Yep, we want YOU to photograph, illustrate or design the cover of an upcoming issue of KoreAm. Here’s the premise of the cover story we’re working on.

Were you born here?

Most of us who were born and/or reared in the United States have had to answer that question, usually posed by a fellow Korean, scores of times over the course of our lives. But we are reaching a period when it will become almost moot, as a critical mass of 1.5- and second-generation Korean Americans are having and raising their own children: The Third Generation.

What will members of this generation be like? Beyond their appearance, will they be detectably Korean in any other way? How many will learn the native language of their grandparents—and does it matter? Will they seek organizations and outlets that connect them to other ethnic Koreans? How will they define “community”?

These are just a few of the questions KoreAm will be tackling in this issue, dedicated to exploring The Third Generation of Korean Americans.

We are calling on artists and photographers intrigued and inspired by this topic to capture its essence in a photo, illustration or graphic design. The winner will have his/her work appear on the cover of KoreAm and receive a lifetime subscription to the magazine, and finalists will have their works published inside the issue.

The deadline to submit your work is February 1. KoreAm editors will select five finalists to post on charactermedia.com. Readers will then vote on the winner.

The rules and details:

— Entrants may submit up to three works but only work per contestant may be selected as a finalist.

— The original image must be 300 dpi at 10.75 x 8.25 inches in CMYK format. Please keep in mind that the KoreAm logo must run across the top two inches of the magazine.

— Submissions must be original works created specifically for this contest, and must not have been submitted previously in a contest of any kind.

— Submissions must not infringe on any other person’s or entity’s rights. If models are used on the cover, please include a signed model release form. Submissions may be used for KoreAm promotional purposes.

— Collaborations between multiple artists/photographers will be accepted.

— Finalists will be selected based on the strength of the concept and the execution.

— To enter, email a web-sized (72 dpi) version of your submission to elizabeth@koreamjournal.com. If your work wins, we will ask for the original file. Please include your full name, city, art or photography background (if applicable) and a one-paragraph description of your cover concept.

Good luck!
