Korean American model and actor Jon Komp Shin has been named as one of the 10 semifinalists in Men’s Health magazine’s second annual “Ultimate Guy Search” contest.

Nearly 1,000 contestants entered the Men’s Health cover model contest this year. In late June, readers were given the chance to vote for their favorite “ultimate guy” on the contest’s website, allowing the 100 most voted contestants to advance to the quarterfinals. Needless to say, Shin made the cut. If the 39-year-old Korean American wins the competition, then he will have the opportunity to grace the November 2015 cover of Men’s Health.

Following his mother’s death, Shin was orphaned as a toddler after his father abandoned him on the steps of a police station. He was first discovered as a model while working as a firefighter in San Francisco and quickly booked gigs for several global brands, such as Samsung, L’Oreal Paris, Google and Toyota.

He eventually landed small roles in Hollywood films and TV series, including Iron Man 3, Furious 7, Marco Polo and True Blood. Recently, Shin served as the body double for Korean superstar Lee Byung-hun in Terminator Genisys.

Now a single father to his 4-year-old son, Shin lives by the motto “Give more than you take” and gives back his community by lending his skills as a former paramedic and juvenile counselor to nonprofit organizations, according to his interview with Men’s Health.

Men’s Health plans to announce its top three finalists by early August. To learn more about the Ultimate Guy Search, visit the contest’s official website or follow the hashtag #MHGuyContest on Twitter.
