KAC-LA: KAC Provides Youth Leadership Programs

With summer in full swing, KAC is proud to promote and provide opportunities to rising generations of young leaders through our leadership programs and events. Our summer programs geared towards college students are the National
College Leadership Conference (NCLC) and the Summer College Internship Program (SCIP).

NCLC celebrated its 34th annual conference aimed at providing college students a valuable opportunity to interact with their counselors, peers and guest
speakers in a camp setting for one week. With small group discussions creating an intimate setting for students to discuss their passion and topics brought up by counselors and speakers, students are given a chance to foster interpersonal
relationships with their peers and to look within and identify their own goals and needs as they prepare to lead our communities.

SCIP brings a select group of college students from across the country to intern at sponsor offices in the area of interest of their choosing: media, nonprofit, government, corporate and others.

Students spend four days at their sponsor office and Fridays at the KAC office working on a community advocacy project. Previous SCIP classes have worked on raising awareness about redistricting, the Taste of Koreatown food festival and more. These two programs work to provide participants a valuable set of tools that will help them in their future.

Throughout the year, KAC also runs programs for local high school students to help them prepare for college. Mentorship Circles, Model United Nations (MUN) and the THINK (Topple Hunger in North Korea) Ambassador programs are all rewarding opportunities for high school students to engage in their local and global communities.

Mentorship Circles begin in August of each year and pairs high school and college students with business professionals who guide them as they continue to mature and grow. Each mentor/mentee pairing is given an opportunity to interact and discuss topics through Mentorship Circles meetings throughout the year.

Model United Nations will be entering its eighth year as a KAC program. Last year, we were able to accept our largest class of students ever and provide 70 percent of students financial aid to attend conferences with the program. MUN program directors work with each student to improve their public speaking, research and interpersonal skills at conferences and weekly meetings. This year, the KAC MUN Invitational Conference for novice MUN students will be held on Aug. 17. For more information, please go to www.kacla.org.

Lastly, the THINK Ambassadors program gives students and adults the chance to learn more about North Korea and the dire humanitarian crises affecting millions of people. THINK Ambassadors are charged with taking an active interest in North Korea and encouraged to read firsthand accounts of North Korean defectors, keep updated with current events and news, and conduct their own research to understand the political climate of North Korea. Through this in-depth level of research,
each ambassador is able to explain North Korea’s situation to new audiences and raise awareness in the process.

These programs aim to reach younger generations of leaders, and as they come into their own and begin to define their identity, we believe it is necessary to present them with these programs to help them reach their fullest potential. To learn
