Fans of those creepy, Asian folktales that have spread across the internet like wildfire are in for a big treat.
HBO Asia’s first original horror anthology series “Folklore” premieres today, Feb. 1, on all HBO streaming platforms. The series will be composed of six one-hour long episodes and will feature stories from six countries: Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. Each terrifying tale is based on each respective locale’s myths and legends and filmed by native directors in each country’s primary language.
The series promises explore a diverse variety of cultural perspectives on horror while still touching on themes that will universally resonate with (and unnerve) viewers. If anything, “Folklore” will bring a breath of fresh air to the tried and tired TV horror formula. Happy hauntings!
