ABC Renews ‘Fresh Off the Boat’ for Season 2

Fresh Off the Boat fans, rejoice! ABC has renewed the Asian American family sitcom for a second season, according to Deadline.

The network has renewed a vast majority of its existing dramas and comedies, including eight freshman shows. Aside from Fresh Off the Boat, other shows that have been picked up for another season includes How to Get Away with Murder, Black-ish, American Crime, Agent Carter, Galavant and Secrets & Lies.

Since Fresh Off the Boat‘s season finale last month, fans—and stars Ian Chen and Forrest Wheeler—have taken to Twitter with the hashtag #RenewFOTB to urge ABC to pick up a second season.

Despite initial “rep sweats” from its Asian American audiences and a tough Tuesday night time slot, Fresh Off the Boat received solid ratings, critical acclaim and a thriving fan base on social media. It was only a matter of time ABC would order a “fresh” batch of episodes for the second season.

It’s been a long journey for Fresh Off the Boat, which has often been hailed as the first Asian American family sitcom on network television in 20 years. The show has faced a number of challenges, including brash criticism from restauranteur Eddie Huang, whose memoir the sitcom is based on.

“It got so far from the truth that I don’t recognize my own life,” Huang said in a series of tweets that criticized the comedy for its inaccurate portrayal of his life.

While Fresh Off the Boat may be a very loose adaptation of Huang’s life, the show has created dialogue about identity, race, gender and culture among Asian American communities. Not to mention, we got to see talented Asian American comedy actors killing it every week (#ConstanceWuForEmmy, make it happen).

One thing this writer personally hopes to see in Season 2 is more Granny Huang. You can never have too much grandma sass.
