The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released its nominations for the 90th Academy Awards, and Kumail Nanjiani and Steve James have each received a nomination for their works that tell the story of Asian American families.
Actor and comedian Kumail Nanjiani, co-wrote the original screenplay for “The Big Sick” with his wife Emily Gordon. The romantic comedy is based on their real-life love story. The film has been nominated for an Oscar in the Best Original Screenplay category.
Steve James’ documentary “Abacus: Small Enough to Jail” follows the Sung family, who own and operate Abacus Federal Savings in New York’s Chinatown. The family must fight for their business when theirs becomes the only bank to face charges in the wake of the 2008 financial recession. The documentary has been nominated in the Best Documentary Feature category.
The 90th Academy Awards will air March 4.
