From the movie Au Revoir Taipei, screening at AAIFF 2010
AAIFF stands for Asian American International Film Festival, which still stands as the longest-running one of its kind (that is, a festival devoted to Asian American film). The importance of that loomed down on me at the past LA Film Festival during a screening of Woman On Fire Looks For Water, a beautifully shot movie that wraps a poetic storyline around some sparse Chinese dialogue, and again during Gareth Edward’s Monsters, which I wanted so badly to fall asleep through. Monsters with all its hype opened to a full house, while Woman On Fire enjoyed maybe two dozen viewers that night.
Luckily you can still catch the latter at AAIFF, which is screening in various parts of NYC. Then there’s Au Revoir Taipei, which looks cute to the extremes that only an Asian film can reach (who else employs such sass??), and Quentin Lee’s The People I’ve Slept With, a film that I’ve seen and that is very sexy. Plus others.
And, as luck would have it, we have three pairs of movie passes to give away! And I can’t use them myself! Because I’m in LA (kicking myself)! So we’re bequeathing them to you. Comment on this post for your chance to win one of two pairs of tickets (and retweet over twitter for an extra entry). You have until Tuesday at midnight PST for this. We’re also giving the third pair of tickets over on our Facebook page later today, so be sure to follow us there.
